Nothing can replace the games we grew up with; it doesn’t matter if the graphics or animation can’t begin to compare to what we have now.

Classics will always make us feel like the kid who skipped class just to have a few more turns at the SNES, or surrounded again by the blaring sounds of the local arcade we used to spend all our afternoons on.

This is why it’s great that publishers are taking classic games to the mobile platform. You don’t need to lug around a C64 to start playing these four classic games:

Metal Slug (iOS, Android)

I can’t even remember the countless afternoons I spent going through Metal Slug with my brother. I was always Marco, and he was Tarma. We went through cities in shambles, forests, and snowy peaks chasing after Morden, and I remember turning our room upside down every time we battled a larger than life boss.

Fans can now relive that experience anywhere they go. Metal Slug 1,2, and 3 is available for download on DotEmu, a gaming website that brings over classic arcade games from the 80’s and 90’s.

R-Type (iOS, Android)

No other shoot ’em up can send gamers into a murderous tizzy quite like R-Type. Touted as one of the best arcade games to come out of the 1980’s, it was also one of the hardest. I still can’t for the life of me get past that stupid red Bydo ship thing from Level 4. If anyone knows how to keep the power-ups long enough to kill that thing, let me know.

The difficulty of R-Type also gained it a lot of hardcore fans, like this man who’s making short anime clips as a tribute to the game.

Raiden Legacy (iOS, Android)

We have another class scrolling shooter on our hands with Raiden Legacy. This was the first game that introduced a lot of players to the concept of “double player mode” where a single player can control two units at the same time.

For everyone who has ever lost countless hours and a small fortune at arcades and local pubs because of Raiden Legacy, you can now do so again (at least countless hours-wise) for $4.99.

The Last Express (iOS, Android)

This classic choose-your-own adventure PC game is now available on mobile. Fans of Telltale games will want to pick up The Last Express, which got numerous Editor’s Choice awards and an award for Best New Adventure and RPG game.
