Layton’s next generation makes its way to your mobile phones

Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy is the latest game in the Professor Layton series, and the second game from the franchise to be released globally on iOS and Android. Unlike the spin-off game, Layton Brothers: Mystery Room, this game is a sequel to the series and focuses on the puzzles that we know and love. Overall, Mystery Journey looks, sounds, and feels like the series’ earlier games on 3DS.

Instead of Professor Hershel Layton, the game stars his detective daughter, Katrielle, who solves the mysteries plaguing London. The game is divided into several chapters and involves different cases that culminate in one overarching plot. While the game does make some references to the original titles, the game is still enjoyable even without playing the earlier games.

Layton’s Mystery Journey was released on mobile devices on July 20, 2017 and is slated to be released for  Nintendo 3DS on October 6, 2017. It costs 15.99 USD (799 PHP) for both iOS and Android, and is available for pre-order for 39.99 USD on 3DS. Level-5 has stated in an interview here that the difference in price is due to a number of in-app purchases that are available in the mobile version. However, the gaming experience should be the same for all of these platforms..

III. Game Review

In terms of graphics, the game follows the same style as its predecessors. The style is almost cartoon-like, and all the characters have their own distinguishing features. The character animations add to the characters’ personalities as they converse over the game’s assorted backgrounds and sceneries. The game also shifts to 2D cutscenes at certain points in the story.

Just like on 3DS, the phone screen is split between the top-half, which shows the wonderful scenery of London, and the bottom-half, which holds the game’s controls. You can swipe on the bottom-half of your phone’s screen to navigate your magnifying glass over points of interest. On the mobile version, you can also directly tap on the top-half of the screen to investigate.

The meat of the gameplay is in its puzzles. True to Layton tradition, puzzles fall between laughably easy, fiendishly tricky and downright brutal difficulties. Even the most simple-looking puzzles can trap you with deceptive wordplay. Don’t worry, you’ll get an idea about the puzzle’s difficulty just by looking at the picarats (a currency used to unlock bonus content) it gives out. Be careful though, get the answer wrong and your reward diminishes.

If you want to finish the game without losing any picarats, expect to burn a number of the game’s hint coins and a few minutes second-guessing your every answer. All your efforts are worth it when you see this:

Aside from the main storyline, the game also includes daily downloadable puzzles. As mentioned before, the mobile version does include some in-app purchases. However, these purchases are for additional costumes for Katrielle, along with some extra puzzles.

Whether you are a long-time fan or a newcomer to the series, if puzzles and brain teasers are your thing, you should give this game a try.

While you won’t see any forums aflame about this game, the Layton community in various sites such as Reddit, still discusses this game to see how it measures up to its predecessors.

You won’t see folks discussing game answers to avoid spoiling the fun for other people. However, you can find a hint for a difficult puzzle if you look at the right place.
