Counter-Strike Global Offensive, commonly known as CS:GO, is a multiplayer first-person shooter video game developed by Hidden Path Entertainment and Valve Corporation. Primitively created as a Half-Life mod more than a decade ago, Counter-Strike Global Offensive is a refurbished version of the classic first-person shooter released in 2012 by Valve, founders of Steam. With more than 500,000+ peak players, the game is seated at third place in the most-played games on Steam.

Those who are unfamiliar with Counter Strike will find the game a more electrifying experience rather than the usual run-and-gun arcade style action popularized by known series like Call of Duty and Battlefield. It lived through the years because of its well-balanced gameplay that requires skill and teamwork to succeed.

Gameplay

In CS:GO, there are no character level ups, vehicles, classes, and unlockable avatar skills that will give you an advantage. Dying requires you to pass up until the rest of the match unfolds. Global Offensive’s competitive experience makes you want to do your best in the next round.

The game focuses mainly on strategy, accuracy, and communication, which gives the game a distinctive feel as you choose between 5 online game modes (Arms Race, Demolition, Classic Casual, Classic Competitive, and Deathmatch) as part of the Counter-Terrorist or Terrorist group. Choosing the best weapon and utility from a wide variety of options will give your team an advantage.

Classic Casual and Classic Competitive are team-based modes that are played in multiple rounds. The goal is to eliminate the enemy or be the first team to complete a map scenario given objective.

Game objectives vary from either defusing or planting bombs, to rescuing or defending hostages. While the goals of these two game modes are the same, winning majority of the rounds, they differ in terms of comprehensiveness.

In Classic Casual mode, matches are made up of 15 rounds with friendly-fire disabled, and free armor and defuse kits at the start of every round. Each player can freely connect to a match until the server is full, or can disconnect from a match whenever they choose to. This mode gives you the best practice as there are no ranking placed on the match.

However, in Classic Competitive, matches are composed of 5 players per team playing 30 rounds with a Half-time change of side. In this mode, friendly-fire is enabled, so you have to be careful where you point your guns and grenades. You will also have to manage your economy in order for your team to have the best weapon and utilities as you earn rewards by eliminating the enemy and completing an objective.  This mode also determines your ranking as to which skill group you belong.

The other three modes are Arms Race, Demolition, and Deathmatch. Arms Race consists of a single round where everyone begins with the same weapon. Each kill automatically changes your weapon until you receive a knife. The first person to make a kill with a knife wins the round. While in Deathmatch, you are given an unlimited amount of respawns which you can use to defeat your enemy with any weapon of your choosing. This is the only mode where respawns are possible offering a nice variation for the standard modes. Lastly, Demolition is a combination of Arms Race and Classic, taking the fixed-weapon progression from Arms Race and including multiple round matches with a bomb plant scenario from Classic.

With millions of active players, the small simplistic design of the game is what keeps its community so large. Even with a large amount of maps available in-game, there are also custom maps on the steam workshop for players to try which makes it more interactive. Also, with the growth of e-sports, Counter-Strike has gained a respectable amount of audience since the release of the latter versions.

What makes Counter-Strike Global Offensive so engaging?

Counter-Strike Global Offensive plays quite differently from its competition. Aiming and accuracy requires practice as players have to control various recoil force for each weapon they’ll use. Movements like jumping will penalize your speed and accuracy. Footsteps are heard by the enemy team when running, forcing players to walk their way to each objective and create tactics to silently surprise enemies the other way around. The game’s biggest flaw is that it only offers the same maps as the older version giving veterans clear advantage. However, in order to balance it out, playing with bots are included so players can practice each mode and map. Honing your skills is a must as everyone is on equal playing field and the only thing that will give you an advantage is your skill alone. This isn’t a game that you can just jump into and expect to destroy everyone. Anyone who is up for the challenge must not hesitate to pull the trigger.
